New Faculty Foundations

New Faculty Foundations (hosted by the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (CTLT)) is designed to welcome all newer faculty (lecturers and tenure-line) to the Cal Poly community of educators, connect you with other newer faculty, and provide guidance and resources that will help you prepare for teaching at Cal Poly.

Foundations of College Teaching Workshops

The workshops are designed for educators who have had modest amounts of mentoring or guidance on effective teaching. Workshops may be of special interest to faculty who are industry experts hired as lecturers with minimal or no prior college-level teaching experience, as well as to new PhDs from degree programs that had few opportunities to develop teaching skills. Any educator interested in updating and refreshing their teaching knowledge and skills is also welcome.

This is a full day event from 9-4 and includes a light breakfast and lunch.

Park Playdate

Come join us for a park play date at Meadow Park (even if you do not have kids). Bring your own snacks and drinks and a blanket to sit on if you'd like. There is a playground for kids and a great walking path for all!

Intro to the Division of Research

Come learn about how the office of research is organized (grants development office (GDO), sponsored programs (SPO), Research Integrity & Compliance (RIC), and the Office of Student Research) and learn about the process is for submitting and administering grants.

ACUE Certificate in College Teaching Workshop Begins

The curriculum consists of five major units, each with four, five or six modules, addressing core principles and practices of effective instruction. All are online, and are complemented by on-campus facilitation. The 25 modules will be allocated across Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters with support from cohort facilitators for processing and applying content in partnership with cohort peers.

The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences invites you to join for a driving tour with stops to learn about the Colleges’ unique production units and Centers. The bus holds a maximum of 20 people, so sign ups are required. The group will depart from Ag Circle in front of Building 10.

 

Participants will be able to see the Oppenheimer Family Equine Facility, JUSTIN and J.LOHR Center for Wine and Viticulture, Trestles vineyard, CP Strawberry Center, Grimm Family Organic Center, OH Greenhouse Complex, Rodeo Grounds, Dairy and Creamery, Meat Processing Facility, Animal Nutrition Center, Poultry Unit, Learning Pines Arboretum and Vet. Center. Learn where the Cal Poly wines, meats, produce, BBQ sauce, jams, ice cream, cheese and eggs are made.

Cerro San Luis Hike

Come join us for a hike on one of San Luis Obispo's iconic mountains: Cerro San Luis (aka Madonna Mountain). Bring your families and dogs (must be on a leash), snacks and plenty of water. This hike is of medium difficulty

The Regional Economy

Jim Dantona, President/CEO with the SLO Chamber of Commerce will be joining us to talk about the local industries/businesses that make up our current economy, as well as the chamber’s economic vision, Imagine SLO. The economic vision looks to not only support the growth of our entire economy, but how we can all build a better and more connected community

CLA Tour

The College of Liberal Arts invites you on a walking tour highlighting some of their unique teaching spaces: Spanos theater and backstage area, the Swanson Broadcast Studio, GrC printing labs, the Moon-ja Minn Suhr Dance Studio, the University Art Gallery, and the brand new Cashin Expressive Technology Studio. Health & Wellbeing Open House

Faculty and Staff are welcome to join Campus Health & Wellbeing (CH&W) for an Open House on Monday, Nov. 13, 12:10 to 2 p.m. in the lower patio area of Building 27. This is a great opportunity to learn about CH&W’s Wellbeing Services, which supports the social, emotional and physical health of Cal Poly students through Alcohol and Other Drugs education and programming; PULSE peer-to-peer health education; Food Pantry and Basic Needs support; and Safer prevention education and confidential advocacy resources.

The Office of the Registrar and the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities will present information about grading: student records, grading symbols, grade changes, withdrawals, academic integrity, contesting a grade, etc.

Cerro Alto Hike

Cerro Alto is one of the tallest peaks in San Luis Obispo County and is a difficult hike (1600 feet (~500 meters)) of elevation gain. Feel free to bring friends, family and dogs (on a leash) who are comfortable with hiking up hill. $5 cash required for parking.

Stop by participating offices (New Student and Transition Programs, Educational Opportunity Program, Upward Bound, Latinx/e Center, Black Academic Excellence Center, Graduate Education, Retention, Cal Poly Scholars, Cal Poly Arts, Mustang Success Center, International Center, and Extending, Professional and Continuing Education ) to learn about what the office does to support the Cal Poly community and pick up some free treats and swag.  Print out this building 52 map or just look for balloons as you walk through the building to find participating offices you would like to visit.

DRC & Career Services Tour

The DRC and Career Services will be hosting two tours from 12:10-1 and 1:10-2 on Wednesday Feb 21st. The session will begin in the conference room with a brief presentation by Career Services. You will then get to walk through building 124 to see the professional wardrobe closet, interview rooms, quiet study places, testing center, and more. The session will end back in the conference room with a brief presentation by the DRC.

The Bailey College of Science and Mathematics invites you on a walking tour highlighting some of their unique teaching and research spaces: Chemistry and Physics Studio Classrooms, the Frost Center for Research and Innovation, the Statistics and Mathematics Collaboratorium, Learn-By-Doing Lab, and the Cal Poly Plant Conservatory. Sign-ups are encouraged with the tour starting at the Einstein bench located outside of the second floor of the Baker Center for Science (Building 180)

CENG Tour

The tour will highlight some of CENG's unique spaces: the Mustang 60 Shop, the Microelectronics Fabrication Lab, the Innovation Sandbox, and more. Sign ups are not required, but encouraged.  Gather outside of the Advanced Technology Laboratory (building 007) at noon and the tour will depart at 12:10.

Learning Support Center, Library Special Collections, and Student Ombuds Services Open House

Join us for coffee and donuts and an open house at the new location for the Learning Support Center, Library Special Collections and Student Ombuds Services spaces in Bldg 26 and learn about these important campus resources.

 

The Learning Support Center is designed as the one-stop shop for student academic support on campus. Our new space in Building 26 houses the study session, supplemental instruction, and tutoring coordinating offices and includes a dynamic study area where free tutoring and academic coaching sessions take place. Come meet the Learning Support team and hear more about the academic assistance available to your students.

 

Special Collections and Archives acquires, organizes, describes, preserves, interprets, and provides access to primary research materials in their original formats to support discovery, education, and research at all levels and across disciplines. Please stop by to learn more about the campus's collections and how to schedule research visits, classroom visits, and instructional sessions.  

 

The Office of Student Ombuds Services is a campus resource for all Cal Poly students. The Ombuds staff are committed to hearing about students’ experiences.
